Patchwork & Piecing

Crazy Quilt Piecing   Crazy quilting is not just slapping together whatever scraps you have laying around and hoping for the best. There are different methods of constructing the blocks depending on the look you want to achieve and the kind of scraps you are working with.  You will make two classic blocks as well as two blocks using innovative methods.  Cindy Thury Smith will provide a brief overview of historical crazy quilting styles and share the pros and cons of each method.  You will learn how to avoid some common crazy piecing problems and practice some embellishment options.  References for further study will also be provided.  A printed fabric foundation will be sent to each student.  If you wanted to try this Victorian specialty, this is the perfect opportunity!  Three Lessons.  Supply List.  All levels.  Be inspired by student work in the Gallery.
$27         Class starts September 10.

Lesson One opens on September 10; Lesson Two, September 17; and Lesson Three, September 24.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on October 16.

Stack-n-Whack™ Hexagon Stars  Learn Bethany Reynolds's special techniques for creating kaleidoscope effects from a single print.  The blocks are all different and look incredibly intricate, yet no pre-planning or selective cutting is involved.  The print in your fabric does all the design work.  Class materials will cover fabric selection, preparing the fabric stack, rotary cutting 60° triangles, and fast, accurate piecing techniques.  This class is suitable for confident beginners who have had some experience with rotary cutting.  Three LessonsSupply List.  You can also see student pictures in the Gallery.
$28        Class starts September 10.

Lesson One opens on September 10; Lesson Two, September 17; and Lesson Three, September 24.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on October 16.

Starting From Scratch   Have you wanted to learn to quilt but were daunted by long supply lists?  Are you lost when the instructions tell you  to buy 2 lights, 2 mediums and 2 darks?  This class is for you!  It is a soup-to-nuts approach to quilting for the absolute beginner.  Carol Miller will teach you how to buy your tools, how to select your fabric, which patterns to use and how to size them.  The class is geared toward making your quilt top with a rotary cutter and a sewing machine, but some hand piecing instruction is included and much of the information is the same for either method.  The quilting at the end of class will be by hand.  You will learn the basic square, half square, flying geese, and quick-pieced 4-patch units.  Students will then make a medium square or a lap quilt, using the two basic blocks learned in class.  Variations will be included.  Instructions will take you through the batting, hand quilting and binding.  You CAN learn to quilt!  Six Lessons.  There will be an extra week between Lessons Four and Five, so you will have plenty of time to complete your blocks.  Supply List.  See completed quilts in the Gallery

Too Easy Stained Glass™    Let’s face it.  Quilters love fabric, but some fabrics are hard to use.  Those wonderful landscape fabrics will not be the same if we cut them into tiny pieces.  What to do?  Daphne Greig has the perfect solution.  Framing your quilt with leading lines creates an often surprising new view of your fabrics, drawing the eye in and giving greater attention to your focus fabric.  You will learn a no-bias, no-glue stained glass technique.  As you make a small project, Daphne will show you the Too Easy steps that set this approach apart from other methods.  You will then explore further design options for a variety of fabrics and sizes.  All Levels.  Three LessonsSupply List.
$27         Class starts September 24.

Lesson One opens on September 24; Lesson Two, October 1; and Lesson Three, October 8.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on October 30.
