Patchwork & Piecing

Bargello Seasons   Based on the Flame Stitch design in needlepoint, Bargello quilts fascinate us with the complexity and rich interplay of color and value.  In this beginner class, Ruth Blanchet takes you through the four seasons as she shows you four distinctly different bargello techniques: staggered seams, matching seams, adding fractured strips and reversing half the design to create a reflection.  The fourth will be sewn as a quilt-as-you-go project.  You will be able to make four individual small projects or combine them as one large quilt.  Border and quilting options are included.  Level: Anyone confident with rotary cutting and machine sewing.  There will be an extra week between each lesson.  Four Lessons.  See Supply List for more pictures.
$39     [credit card only]   Class starts July 5.

Lesson One opens on July 5; Lesson Two, July 19; Lesson Three, August 2; and Lesson Four, August 16.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on September 6.

Curved Piecing Made Easy   This class is divided equally between design and technique.  Using a block which you design, you will sew curves easily, while learning to determine value and line.  Make a wall hanging as large or as small as you desire.  Michele Scott will assist you as you design your block and provide you with lots of examples of how your designs will look.  This freezer paper technique is for anyone who wants the speed of machine piecing combined with the freedom to put their seams anywhere they choose.  The paper stops the fabric from stretching and accurately marks the seam line, making curved piecing practically painless.  You will be sewing, NOT APPLIQUÉING, your seams into gentle curves.  Level: While must be comfortable with your machine sewing skills, this is a beginner class in curves.  It is a good first step for those who want to learn to deal with construction techniques outside of the straight line, whether in a traditional block setting or more contemporary art quilts.  Four Lessons. See Supply List.
$36         Class starts July 12.

Lesson One opens on July 12; Lesson Two, July 19; Lesson Three, July 26; and Lesson Four, August 2.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on August 23.

Crazy Quilt Piecing   Crazy quilting is not just slapping together whatever scraps you have laying around and hoping for the best. There are different methods of constructing the blocks depending on the look you want to achieve and the kind of scraps you are working with.  You will make two classic blocks as well as two blocks using innovative methods.  Cindy Thury Smith will provide a brief overview of historical crazy quilting styles and share the pros and cons of each method.  You will learn how to avoid some common crazy piecing problems and practice some embellishment options.  References for further study will also be provided.  A printed fabric foundation will be sent to each student.  If you wanted to try this Victorian specialty, this is the perfect opportunity!  Three Lessons.  See Supply List.  All levels.
$27         Class starts July 26.

Lesson One opens on July 26; Lesson Two, August 2; and Lesson Three, August 9.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on August 30.

Fancy That   Fans make us think of gentler times and gracious living.  You can make your quilt large or small, in two colors or full of scraps. You can even use up those old neckties you have been saving.  Instructions for using necktie fabrics are included.  This picture shows only one of the possible layouts. The options page will show you many other layouts, both straight and on point.  Templates are provided for a range of sizes.  Nyla Morrison will show you how to make both pointed fan blades and smooth fans, with or without bias edging.  Skill level: comfortable with rotary cutter and sewing machine.  Three Lessons.  See Supply List.

Appliqué

Hawaiian Quilting 101   Hawaiian quilts are visually striking because of their sophistication, symmetry, and strong contrasting colors.  They look difficult to make and yet are surprisingly easy.  Nancy Chong shows you each stress-free step, as you create this 20" breadfruit block.  Traditionally it is believed that if your first quilt is a breadfruit, you will be certain to make many more quilts, and we want you to get off to a great start!  This is an ideal way to learn the needleturn appliqué method.  No previous appliqué experience is necessary.  In this introductory class, you will learn how to transfer the design to the fabric, cut it out, lay it open on the background fabric, baste and hand appliqué the design.  You will learn to mark echo-quilting rows, to hand quilt and to bind your project.  Along the way, Nancy will share a little about the history, superstitions and traditions surrounding Hawaiian quilt making.  Four Lessons.  There will be an extra week between Lessons Two and Three.  See Supply List for additional pictures.
$37      [credit card only]   Class starts July 5.

Lesson One opens on July 5; Lesson Two, July 12; Lesson Three, July 26; and Lesson Four, August 2.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on August 23.

Hand Appliqué Basics   In this class you will learn a number of different methods you can use to achieve beautiful appliqué.  Nyla Morrison will show you how to do that dip in a heart, sharp points, smooth curves, bias and more.  We will also discuss fabric choices, thread, needles, pins, and marking pencils.  This class is suitable for beginners or those quilters who have done some appliqué and are looking to improve their skills.  This is a technique class.  A pattern and pattern pieces will be supplied, but you may work with your own pattern, if you choose.  Three Lessons.  See Supply List.
$27         Class starts July 12.

Lesson One opens on July 12; Lesson Two, July 19; and Lesson Three on July 26. Once a lesson opens, it remains available until your classroom closes on August 16.

Layered Machine Appliqué   Traditional appliqué begins with a background fabric and adds shapes to the surface to create a design.  The background is cut away beneath the shapes to give you a smooth surface.  Ruth Blanchet throws that idea out the window in this modern approach to creating fabric pictures.  You will learn to add layers on top of each other, trimming some away to create the illusion of depth and leaving others to promote dimensionality.  The multi-colored grapes are stacked one on top of another as they would be in a real cluster.  Topstitching and heavy quilting contribute to the overall effect of perspective and shading.  You can make the design as shown or alter it to reflect your own vision.  Four Lessons.  Extra week after Lesson Three.  Level: Intermediate.  This class is offered once a year.  See Supply List.
$37         Class starts July 12.

Lesson One opens on July 12; Lesson Two, July 19; Lesson Three, July 26; and Lesson Four, August 9.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on August 30.

Stained Glass Bouquet   If you have ever looked at a stained glass window and envisioned it as a quilt, you will love this class.  The abundance of beautiful fabrics available today, especially batiks,  tone-on-tones, and hand-dyed fabrics, have made the transition from window to wall hanging very simple.  Nyla Morrison will teach you how to modify a real stained glass pattern for use with fabric and how to turn an appliqué pattern into a stained glass project.  You will also learn multiple methods, including fusible, of making the bias needed to achieve the stained glass look.  This wall hanging can be done completely by hand OR machine, including the quilting.  Suitable for all levels.  Three Lessons.  Two patterns provided.  See Supply List.
$27         Class starts August 2.

Lesson One opens on August 2; Lesson Two, August 9; and Lesson Three, August 16.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on September 6.

Triple Treat Tulips   Learn three different ways to do machine appliqué.  Susan Brittingham will introduce you to three popular machine appliqué methods: fusible satin stitch appliqué, hand-look appliqué and buttonhole stitch appliqué.  All are done on the sewing machine, so your projects are completed quickly, but look beautiful!   Students may create a large or small tulip wall hanging to practice the various techniques.  After this class you will never fear the dreaded "A" word again.  Skill level: requires competence with sewing machine stitches.  Three Lessons.    See Supply List.  This class is offered once a year.
$27        Class starts August 2.

Lesson One opens on August 2; Lesson Two, August 9; and Lesson Three, August 16.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on September 6.

Embroidery Modules

Digitized Quilting   Did you ever think that you would be able to sit at a home embroidery sewing machine and quilt?  With photos and step by step instructions, Joanne Winn will show you how to use your embroidery module to quilt.  Students will construct a 30" x 30" simple one block quilt with wide borders to accommodate the feather border quilting designs.  This method is especially nice for hands that no longer enjoy moving the quilt under the machine manually.  Embroidery designs included with this class are: a large triangle, small double triangle, center design and multihooped feather corner border design.  These designs were digitized using software that automatically sequences the designs so there are no jump stitches.  Skill level: Intermediate to Advanced. You must know how to use your embroidery module. Students should also have experience with rotary cutting and piecing a simple quilt.  This is NOT a beginner class. Four Lessons.  See Supply List.
$36         Class starts July 19.

Lesson One opens on July 19; Lesson Two, July 26; Lesson Three, August 2; and Lesson Four, August 9.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on August 30.

Embroidery on Patchwork   Do all of your family and friends own a tee shirt or sweatshirt that you embroidered for them?  Learn how to use your embroidery module to combine embroidery with quilting.  Joanne Winn will teach you how to use either a home sewing machine with an embroidery module or a regular home sewing machine to stitch a beautiful tablerunner.  The embroidery module tablerunner is stitched completely on the hoop of your embroidery module.  The regular sewing machine method is not sewn in a hoop.  Both methods have step-by-step instructions and photos to help you take advantage of all the wonderful stitches, motifs and embellishments your machine has to offer.  Three Lessons.  Skill Level: This class is not for beginners.  If  you have an embroidery module, you must have successfully downloaded and stitched a file prior to class.  You should have some piecing experience.  See Supply List for details.
$27         Class starts August 9.

Lesson One opens on August 9; Lesson Two, August 16; and Lesson Three, August 23.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on September 13.
