Quilting and Surface Embellishment

Printing on Fabric   Learn how to take your favourite photographs and print them onto fabric using your ink jet printer and computer.   Ruth Blanchet will take you through the process of preparing fabric to accept the photograph and then show you four creative ways to use your fabric photos in projects.  You will be able to make quilt labels,  fabric books and a small memory wall hanging.  In the last project, you will use a scenic photo as the base for thread painting.  This exciting technique will open the doors to many possibilities in quilt making.  Level: basic quilting and sewing skills.  Must be comfortable with your printer and scanner.  You need either MS Word or a graphics software program to create labels.  Three LessonsSupply List.

  Whisper Felting   The felting process doesn't have to give you a thick pad of uniform denseness.  The results can be light and supple.  Felting offers quilters a way to embellish fabric with a wide variety of textures and patterns.  By felting different materials together, you can change the color.  Lily Kerns will show you how to combine fibers, yarns and fabric using several different hand and machine techniques.  You will make a collection of samples and three small projects.  Little actual sewing is required.  All levels.  Four Lessons.  See Supply List.

More Machine Quilting   Move beyond the basics of machine quilting.  In this class, Carol Miller will show you how to create more elaborate free motion motifs, how to add trapunto to your quilt tops and how to draw with thread.  You will learn to work with different kinds of threads and needles as you expand your skills and increase your comfort level.  Small projects in the first three lessons will prepare you to design your own small wholecloth quilt in the last lesson.  Carol will show you how to plan and mark your design.  Skill level: Intermediate.  Must be comfortable with stippling, following basic stencils and sewing straight lines with a walking foot.  Four LessonsSupply List.

Dyeing and Painting

Dyeing with Tea and Spices   Tea stain dyeing has been used for centuries to color textiles or give fabrics an aged or antiqued look.  Homespun fabrics were colored with spices, flowers and vegetable skins.  Fabric designer and textile artist Marjie McWilliams will take you through the simple step-by-step method of making your own test samples and staining your own projects with these natural ingredients.  In addition to a pillow pattern, Marjie provides many ideas for items to stain.  When this class was two lessons, it was called Tea Stain Dyeing.  Three Lessons.  All levels.  Supply List.    Students use their fabric creatively in the Gallery.

Playing with Paint   Have you ever wanted to create your own fabric prints for that special project?  Let Lyric Kinard introduce you to the wonderful possibilities of fabric paint.  Using paint with an assortment of brushes and sponges, you can add fascinating patterns to fabric.  You will also learn to carve simple stamps, cut basic stencils and print with found objects, even food!  At the end of class, you will paint a silk scarf that is sure to become your favorite wardrobe accessory.  All levels.  Four LessonsSupply List.  See examples of student work in the Gallery.

Pictorial Quilts

Viewpoints - A Quilter's Perspective   Bring the art of perspective, one of the most important of an artist's tools, to your quilt making as you learn to create the illusion of depth in your work.  The simple techniques you will study are essential for creating interiors and work well when combined with landscapes to create "a room with a view".  You will learn to make eye catching three-dimensional frames to border your quilts and practice some exercises in linear perspective.  This Susan Brittingham class will also teach you about columns, arches, and other architectural details.  This is a process class in which you will learn new skills to use in your own quilts.  Intermediate level.  Four LessonsSupply List.  You can see examples of student work in the Gallery.

  Winter Wonderland   Learn how to make falling snow and just about anything that is covered with snow, including pine trees, rocks, bare trees, snowmen and snow angels.  In the first three lessons, you will create a 17" x 22" scene based on a photo taken at Yosemite, then choose from three small bonus projects in Lesson Four.  Linda Schmidt will walk you through the project step by step, teaching you how to make paint and glitter give the appearance of snow.  By the time you have finished the class, you will be ready to create your own original snow scene.  Perfect for making personalized cards, ornaments or book covers, too!  Level: You should be a confident user of your sewing machine and willing to try unusual non-sewing material and methods.  Four Lessons. Flower Power   Capture the unexpected color burst of a wildflower or the riotous hues of a summer garden in your quilts.  Susan Brittingham will show you several different ways to create flower image quilts, including collage, free motion appliqué and upside down appliqué.  For bigger quilts, you can enlarge your image and use freezer paper or fusible appliqué methods.  Additional techniques for three dimensional work and embellishments will be examined.  Skill level: Intermediate to advanced quilters who wish to explore more advanced machine appliqué techniques, to expand their skills and to learn ways to combine different techniques.  Five Lessons.  Extra week after Lesson Four.  Supply List.  See student projects in the Gallery.

Miniature Landscapes   This class introduces some of the major principles for designing realistic landscapes using atmospheric perspective.  Emphasis will be on the effective use of color to create the illusion of depth for quilters who are ready to try branching out into landscapes.  Students will begin to stitch their own small fabric "paintings" using fusible appliqué, free motion machine embroidery and some embellishment ideas.  Award-winning quilter Susan Brittingham will provide designs for several mountain landscapes, so you do not need to know how to draw to take this class.  Your finished project will be suitable for framing and will fit a 9" x 12" or 8" x 10" frame, or you may wish to add borders and bind it.  To complete your project you will need a sewing machine with an adjustable zigzag stitch and the ability to lower or cover the feed dogs.  Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate, especially designed for first time landscape quilters.  Four LessonsSupply List.  See Gallery for previous student work.

Realistic Fabric Portraits is perfect for quilters who think they cannot draw.  Start with a photograph and you, too, will be accepting compliments for your skills.  Award-winning artist and quilter, Marilyn Belford, will guide you step-by-step through the techniques that enable you to produce realistic fabric portraits of loved ones.  In this class, you will learn how to use the computer to adjust photos, appliqué by fusing, deal with the features on a face and use thread painting for the finishing touches.  Good basic sewing skills are necessary in this machine class.  Five Lessons.  Extra week after Lesson Four.  See Supply List and completed student quilts in the Gallery.

Design & Color

Reflections   You don't have to go to art school to learn the secrets of design.  Using a reflection symmetry project as her sample, Dena Crain will teach you how to create your own original designs.  Along the way, you will learn to refine your design by recognizing both flaws and opportunities and to explore how color and value continue the design process long after the drawing is finished.  You will create a small piece as you work through the class.  Dena's special construction techniques will enable you to move away from the tyranny of traditional piecing.  You can draw your designs in a graphics program or do it all with paper and pencil.  Level: Intermediate.  Four Lessons Supply List.  See examples of student work in the Gallery

Using Fusing to Express Yourself   Using fusible web and seamless piecing along with decorator threads and yarns, you will design and create a small quilt.  The doors of creativity will open in this fast and fun class as you investigate free form cutting to build collage-type artworks that express you!  Michele Scott will show you how raw edge appliqué with fusible web, free motion machine quilting and embellishment can be used to express something important to you: a feeling, a person or a place.  Additional focus will be placed on color and line that can translate your feeling.  All levels.  Three LessonsSupply List.    See student projects in the Gallery.

Structured Fabrics: Stripes, Checks and Plaids   Step away from straight seam construction and reliance on commercial fabric design.  Build your own structured fabrics using materials in your stash.  You will learn how to combine freehand rotary cutting techniques and machine appliqué with zigzag stitching to make stunning stripes, checks, and plaids.  Dena Crain will teach you an easy way to design your own wall quilt or you can use one of the layouts provided.  Dena will also show you how to enhance your structured fabrics with embellishments.  Every piece of fabric you build will have your personal signature look.  Skill Level: Intermediate.  Every piece of fabric is stitched down on both sides, so this is a time intensive class.  Four Lessons Supply List.  See student work in the Gallery.

Color Companions   Are you intimidated by the color wheel?  Don't be.  These guys are all the best of friends and they would love to have  you join them.  You just need to learn the secret handshake!  Seriously, learning who gets along and why is the key to putting together fabulous color combinations.  This class expands on a series of articles Carol Miller wrote for Traditional Quilter magazine.  Never again be the victim of a boring quilt!  Learn by doing as you make your own fabric color wheel and five 24" blocks.  The blocks can be joined together or displayed singly.  All levels.  Five Lessons.  Extra week after Lesson Four.  Supply List.  See Gallery for previous student work.

Playing With Lines and Shapes is a beginner design workshop.  Students will play with lines and shapes as you explore original design.  Leave lots of time for working through both pencil and fabric exercises.  Lily Kerns will help you to think and see from a different point of view.  You will then move into shapes, starting with a dimensional exercise to help you understand the changeable quality of objects.  The class also includes a basic introduction to art principles.  Four LessonsSupply List.  See examples of student work in the Gallery.

Computer-Aided Quilt Design

Our EQ classes should be taken in the proper order.  They will repeat frequently throughout the year.  Please give yourself time to learn the class materials and practice them before taking the next class.

EQ6 Building Blocks   Let Fran Gonzalez show you the power of the two EQ6 drawing tables, EasyDraw and PatchDraw.  You will learn how to analyze designs, set up the drawing board and use the program’s sophisticated drawing tools to create a collection of pieced and appliquéd designs.  Start with simple grid structures and progress to complex arc designs, appliqué blocks, appliqué motifs and quilting stencils.  Your confidence with EQ6 will grow as you discover how to edit, rotate, resize, clone, partition and flip your designs.  You will also combine EasyDraw and PatchDraw drawings, briefly explore WreathMaker, and experiment with many of EQ6's generous printing options.  This is the second class in the EQ6 series.  Supply List.  Four Lessons.  See student projects in the Gallery.

EQ6 Sampler   Are you ready to explore EQ6?  Fran Gonzalez will guide you through the basic features and functions of EQ6 as you design a dynamic new sampler quilt.  You will explore the libraries, analyze and draw blocks, experiment with color tools, design quilt layouts, add motifs and stencils, create a quilt label, and discover the wide range of convenient printing options.  By the end of class, you will have a project file packed with unique and exciting designs plus enough confidence to actively explore EQ6 on your own.  EQ6 users of every level are welcome, with special emphasis on beginners.  This is the first class is the EQ6 series.  Four LessonsSupply List.  See student projects in the Gallery.

Paper and Foundation Piecing

Paper Pieced Paradise   Paper piecing, foundation piecing, sew and flip, whatever you call this method, using it you will give you perfect blocks and no more chopped off points!  During this class, Daphne Greig will show you how to create your foundations, select and prepare your fabrics and how to sew perfect blocks every time.  Even traditional blocks can be pieced this way; it is not just for small blocks or unusual blocks with sharp points.  You can make the layout as shown in the class sample or rearrange the blocks to create a sampler or a completely different scene. Getting Started Online   Are you ready to take your place online?  Whether you are planning to enter the marketplace, help run your guild Web site or just establish a showcase for your quilting talents, Julie Neu will guide you to the correct choice and help you establish your Web presence.  Defining your goals will determine whether you choose to enter an established community, start a blog or launch a Web site.  Julie will also show you the best ways to publicize your site and use social networking sites.  No Web experience or design software is needed, but you should be comfortable with your computer and with navigating online.  All levels.  Three Lessons.  See Outline.
