Pictorial Quilts

Winter Wonderland   Learn how to make falling snow and just about anything that is covered with snow, including pine trees, rocks, bare trees, snowmen and snow angels.  In the first three lessons, you will create a 17" x 22" scene based on a photo taken at Yosemite, then choose from three small bonus projects in Lesson Four.  Linda Schmidt will walk you through the project step by step, teaching you how to make paint and glitter give the appearance of snow.  By the time you have finished the class, you will be ready to create your own original snow scene.  Perfect for making personalized cards, ornaments or book covers, too!  Level: You should be a confident user of your sewing machine and willing to try unusual non-sewing material and methods.  Four Lessons. Flower Power   Capture the unexpected color burst of a wildflower or the riotous hues of a summer garden in your quilts.  Susan Brittingham will show you several different ways to create flower image quilts, including collage, free motion appliqué and upside down appliqué.  For bigger quilts, you can enlarge your image and use freezer paper or fusible appliqué methods.  Additional techniques for three dimensional work and embellishments will be examined.  Skill level: Intermediate to advanced quilters who wish to explore more advanced machine appliqué techniques, to expand their skills and to learn ways to combine different techniques.  Five Lessons.  Extra week after Lesson Four.  Supply List.  See student projects in the Gallery.

Realistic Fabric Portraits is perfect for quilters who think they cannot draw.  Start with a photograph and you, too, will be accepting compliments for your skills.  Award-winning artist and quilter, Marilyn Belford, will guide you step-by-step through the techniques that enable you to produce realistic fabric portraits of loved ones.  In this class, you will learn how to use the computer to adjust photos, appliqué by fusing, deal with the features on a face and use thread painting for the finishing touches.  Good basic sewing skills are necessary in this machine class.  Five Lessons.  Extra week after Lesson Four.  Supply List.  See completed student quilts in the Gallery.

Design & Color

Playing With Lines and Shapes is a beginner design workshop.  Students will play with lines and shapes as you explore original design.  Leave lots of time for working through both pencil and fabric exercises.  Lily Kerns will help you to think and see from a different point of view.  You will then move into shapes, starting with a dimensional exercise to help you understand the changeable quality of objects.  The class also includes a basic introduction to art principles.  Four LessonsSupply List.  See examples of student work in the Gallery.

Crystal Quilts entice us with their apparent complexity.  We look at them and cannot see how they were put together.  Dena Crain will teach you the secrets to their design, showing you how to refine your original drawing to create the most effective piece possible.  You will also learn to use her assembly techniques, which allow you to piece non-traditional shapes and unusual seam intersections with ease.  You will examine the most effective ways to quilt your creation and finish by learning some tricks for hanging your Crystal Quilt.  The class includes a short bonus lesson on tessellating these quilts.  Level: Intermediate to advanced.  Four LessonsSupply List.  See previous student work in the Gallery.

Using Fusing to Express Yourself   Using fusible web and seamless piecing along with decorator threads and yarns, you will design and create a small quilt.  The doors of creativity will open in this fast and fun class as you investigate free form cutting to build collage-type artworks that express you!  Michele Scott will show you how raw edge appliqué with fusible web, free motion machine quilting and embellishment can be used to express something important to you: a feeling, a person or a place.  Additional focus will be placed on color and line that can translate your feeling.  All levels.  Three LessonsSupply List.  See student projects in the Gallery.

Artist's Toolbox   If you have always had the  desire to be an artist or simply wish to increase your creativity, Lyric Kinard will teach you the basic alphabet of art as a visual language.  You will learn by completing a series of exercises in paper and cloth in your sketchbook.  By the end of class, you will have a complete and unique textbook of your new tools.  A supportive and encouraging environment will boost your design abilities and your appreciation of fine art, whether you are a traditional quilter or an aspiring art quilter.  Level: Anyone interested in improving their understanding of art principles. Computer-Aided Quilt Design

EQ7 Building Blocks   Learn how to draw effectively and efficiently in EQ7.  Fran Gonzalez will guide you as you start with simple grid and arc structures and progress to advanced designs that include complex pieced and appliqué blocks, motifs and stencils.  You will edit, rotate, resize, clone, partition and flip your designs.  You will also learn how to combine pieced and appliqué designs, create with WreathMaker and experiment with the wide range of EQ7’s printing options.  This is the second class in the EQ7 series.  If you have previously taken EQ6 Building Blocks, you do NOT need this class.  Four LessonsSupply List.

Paper and Foundation Piecing

Paper Pieced Paradise   Paper piecing, foundation piecing, sew and flip, whatever you call this method, using it you will give you perfect blocks and no more chopped off points!  During this class, Daphne Greig will show you how to create your foundations, select and prepare your fabrics and how to sew perfect blocks every time.  Even traditional blocks can be pieced this way; it is not just for small blocks or unusual blocks with sharp points.  You can make the layout as shown in the class sample or rearrange the blocks to create a sampler or a completely different scene. Displaying Your Quilts   This class is for anyone with quilts to show off.  Whether you are new to quilting or have been quilting for years, Susan Dorchester will help you with ideas on how to best display quilts in your home.  You will also learn how to store your quilts safely.  Detailed instructions and photos will provide guidelines for hanging with many different techniques.  There are ideas for all styles of quilts, from traditional to art quilts.  You will also learn how to use artist canvas to display quilts.  Skill level: all.  Three Lessons.  See Supply List.
