Quilting and Surface Embellishment

Arabesque:  An Embellished Trapunto Project   Embellished trapunto changes the texture of the fabric with embroidery and embellishments and adds volume with quilting and trapunto.  This  technique gives an intricate and delicate look to your quilt.  Martine House has won awards for her exquisite needlework.  She will show you not only how to complete this project, but give you a firm foundation so that you can use embellished trapunto with other designs.  This is an introductory  class and you do not need any previous experience with either hand appliqué or embroidery.  You must already know how to quilt.  Five Lessons.  This project can only be sewn by hand so an extra week is provided after Lessons One and Four.  Supply List.  See the work of past students in the Gallery.

Machine Quilting can be a quick way to finish a project or just as elaborate and detailed as hand quilting.  Carol Miller will take you  through the basic machine quilting techniques, including both free motion and straight line designs.  You will learn when to use the even feed foot and how different types of batting affect the way your quilting will look.  We will discuss basting for machine quilting, marking the design and deciding which designs are appropriate where.  Your homework will be a practice piece which you can turn into a table runner if you like or just keep as a handy reference.  Four Lessons.  All skill levels as long as you are comfortable with your sewing machine.  Supply List.  See student work in the Gallery.

Printing on Fabric   Learn how to take your favourite photographs and print them onto fabric using your ink jet printer and computer.   Ruth Blanchet will take you through the process of preparing fabric to accept the photograph and then show you four creative ways to use your fabric photos in projects.  You will be able to make quilt labels,  fabric books and a small memory wall hanging.  In the last project, you will use a scenic photo as the base for thread painting.  This exciting technique will open the doors to many possibilities in quilt making.  Level: basic quilting and sewing skills.  Must be comfortable with your printer and scanner.  You need either MS Word or a graphics software program to create labels.  Three LessonsSupply List.

Fireworks!   Have you looked at fireworks and wondered how you could capture the moment when all the rockets explode into a rainbow of colors?  Helen Marshall has done it and would like to show you how.  The fireworks are machine embroidered onto the pieced surface with brilliant rayon machine embroidery threads.  A few beads can be added after the quilting to truly catch the light.  Fireworks! is 18" x 18" and is suitable for quilters with experience in accurate cutting and piecing and who are ready to try machine embroidery.  Four LessonsSupply List.  See student work in the Gallery.

Filament Fantasy   Fantastic, frantic, frustrating, festive filaments; turbulent, twisting, tormenting threads.  If those words describe your feeling about any threads but cotton, this class is just for you.  Award-winning quilter Linda Schmidt will show you how to use fine and  twisty metallics, rayons, blending filaments, yarns, fine braids, invisible threads and others in your machine as you create this beautiful heart sampler.  Learn how to do invisible machine appliqué, cutwork, make thread appliqués, machine bead, use two threads in one needle, and much, much more.  Four Lessons.  Intermediate to advanced level.  Supply List.  See student work in the Gallery.

Dyeing and Painting

Playing with Paint   Have you ever wanted to create your own fabric prints for that special project?  Let Lyric Kinard introduce you to the wonderful possibilities of fabric paint.  Using paint with an assortment of brushes and sponges, you can add fascinating patterns to fabric.  You will also learn to carve simple stamps, cut basic stencils and print with found objects, even food!  At the end of class, you will paint a silk scarf that is sure to become your favorite wardrobe accessory.  All levels.  Four LessonsSupply List.  See examples of student work in the Gallery.

Silk Dyeing   The art of dyeing silk is thousands of years old.  With today's technologies and advances in chemical processes, we no longer have to go out and dig up bugs, earth or berries to make exquisite colors nor wait months and months for our ship to bring the silk to us from the outer edges of the world.  In this class, Marjie McWilliams will teach you to mix and apply dye colors to two different kinds and weights of silk.  You will learn three dyeing techniques: total immersion, partial immersion to create mottled colors, and painting with dyes to create watercolor effects that will dazzle the eye.  This is primarily a process class, but will include quite a few project suggestions for things you can do with these extraordinary fabric creations.  This class will be offered once a year.  For best results, a minimum room temperature of 65º F throughout the dyeing process is recommended.  Four Lessons.  All Levels.  Supply List.  Look in the Gallery for examples of student work.

Fabric Painting is a satisfying art form.  No drawing or painting skills are required for this class.  It’s really quite simple.  The fabric paints  come ready-mixed.  Use Marjie McWilliams's designs or make up your own.  Together we will make color samples, experiment with color mixing, color thinning, and color layering.  Although this is a process class, the results may trigger great project ideas and expand your quilting horizons in new and exciting ways.  Five Lessons.  All Levels.  Supply List.  See Gallery for previous student work.

Pictorial Quilts

Day In The Country   The Scarecrow is just one of 20 blocks in this charming and humorous quilt.  Ruth Blanchet will guide you step by step through many different techniques, including blanket stitch appliqué, machine embroidery, set in blocks, dimensional appliqué, adding pieced borders and foundation piecing.  Bonus instructions in each lesson will show you how to add the motifs to different items, including a supply bag, growth chart, tote, vest and  pillows.  The individual units look great on all kinds of projects!  You can even use different scenes as the focal point for medallion quilts.  Suitable for advanced beginners and up.  Six Lessons.  There will be an extra week after Lessons One and Five.  Supply List.  See samples from student quilts in the Gallery.  This class is offered once a year.

Artists Revisited   Have you always wanted to see a Rembrandt or a Cezanne hanging on your living room wall?  Now you can.  Learn how to translate a work of art by your favorite artist into a fabulous fabric wallhanging.  Marilyn Belford will guide you, step by step, from selecting the artwork, choosing and applying the fabric through free-motion embroidery and quilting right up to hanging the finished art quilt on the wall.  No paints are used.  Her methods employ only fabric and threads to recreate the artistry of the tableau of your choice.  Class includes a choice of three  patterns of famous art works or instructions for finding copyright-free pictures of other art.  Sewing level: intermediate to advanced.  No special drawing skills are necessary.  The illustration is Marilyn's interpretation of a Gauguin painting.  Supply ListFive Lessons.  There will be an extra week between Lessons Two and Three.  See what other students have done in class.

Viewpoints - A Quilter's Perspective   Bring the art of perspective, one of the most important of an artist's tools, to your quilt making as you learn to create the illusion of depth in your work.  The simple techniques you will study are essential for creating interiors and work well when combined with landscapes to create "a room with a view".  You will learn to make eye catching three-dimensional frames to border your quilts and practice some exercises in linear perspective.  This Susan Brittingham class will also teach you about columns, arches, and other architectural details.  This is a process class in which you will learn new skills to use in your own quilts.  Intermediate level.  Four LessonsSupply List.  You can see student examples in the Gallery.

Design & Color

Journal Quilts   Lily Kerns will help you learn how to make journal quilts that reflect you and your view of the world.  You will gather many ideas and find your own voice for creative quilt making.  Your journal quilts can be based on your life or they can be explorations of color or technique.  As you make three journal quilts in class, you may use techniques you have learned in other classes or that have piqued your interest in books or magazines.  This class does NOT teach techniques. You will look at how other people approach journaling and complete a series of mental exercises to open your mind to self expression. Lesson Four will teach you several ways to display your quilts, including how to turn them into a book.  This class will stretch your imagination.  It is not recommended for beginners.  Four LessonsSupply List.  Look at what previous students have made.

Designer Pinwheels   You already know how to make a pinwheel.  In this class, you will learn how to divide each quarter into smaller shapes and manipulate them around the center for a completely new look.  Dena Crain will even show you how to create tessellations with your lines.  You will learn how to piece without unnecessary seams, so you can achieve beautiful results.  You will learn why and how to use embellishments to enhance your designs.  Instructions are provided for designing your pinwheel quilts on paper or with Electric Quilt or CorelDraw if you are already competent with the software.  Optional patterns are available for those who do not wish to design their own quilt top.  Skill Level: Intermediate sewing skills.  Four LessonsSupply List.  See student work in the Gallery.

Watercolor Wizardry   Let Carol Miller show you how to paint with fabric.  Imagine holding a palette with 200 dabs of paint!  Your stash is  your palette.  Color, value, texture, and pattern all come into play as you practice with a geometric design and a landscape.  In Lesson Four, you will work on an original picture.  Learn to add depth, shape and shadows to your work.  Watercolor Wizardry will stretch your imagination and lead you into experimentation.  If you think all quilted watercolors are filled with floral fabrics, think again.  Basic piecing experience required.  Four Lessons.  Extra week after Lessons Two and Three to allow time for sewing.  Supply List.  This class will be offered once this year.  See examples of student work in the Gallery.

Playing With Lines and Shapes is a beginner design workshop.  Students will play with lines and shapes as you explore original design.  Leave lots of time for working through both pencil and fabric exercises.  Lily Kerns will help you to think and see from a different point of view.  You will then move into shapes, starting with a dimensional exercise to help you understand the changeable quality of objects.  The class also includes a basic introduction to art principles. Using Fusing to Express Yourself   Using fusible web and seamless piecing along with decorator threads and yarns, you will design and create a small quilt.  The doors of creativity will open in this fast and fun class as you investigate free form cutting to build collage-type artworks that express you!  Michele Scott will show you how raw edge appliqué with fusible web, free motion machine quilting and embellishment can be used to express something important to you: a feeling, a person or a place.  Additional focus will be placed on color and line that can translate your feeling.  All levels.  Three LessonsSupply List.    See student projects in the Gallery.

Color Companions   Are you intimidated by the color wheel?  Don't be.  These guys are all the best of friends and they would love to have  you join them.  You just need to learn the secret handshake!  Seriously, learning who gets along and why is the key to putting together fabulous color combinations.  This class expands on a series of articles Carol Miller wrote for Traditional Quilter magazine.  Never again be the victim of a boring quilt!  Learn by doing as you make your own fabric color wheel and five 24" blocks.  The blocks can be joined together or displayed singly.  All levels.  Five Lessons.  Extra week after Lesson Four.  Supply List.  See Gallery for previous student work.

Super Sue   As far back as Sunbonnet Sue, quilters have added people to their quilts.  Lily Kerns sees those people as all grown up and facing the world.  She shows you how to use a repositionable mannequin to make action figures and how to design clothes for them.  You can use her patterns or your own, either in traditional settings or on an interactive quilt with interchangeable figures, clothing and backgrounds.  A mini art lesson is included each week to help you develop your drawing skills.  Level: Strong basic skills and adventurous spirit.  Lily's classes are not 1-2-3 projects.  She sees multiple possibilities at every step.  There will be more ideas here than you can try during the class period.  Four Lessons. Computer-Aided Quilt Design

Our EQ classes should be taken in the proper order.  They will repeat frequently throughout the year.  Please give yourself time to learn the class materials and practice them before taking the next class.

EQ6 Advanced Layouts   Now that you have a working knowledge of EQ6, are you ready to dive into the deep end of quilt design?  In this class, Fran Gonzalez will show you how to use EQ6's powerful advanced design tools to create a series of complex quilts in a wide variety of layout styles: Horizontal, On-Point, Medallion, Strip and Custom Set.  As part of the design process, you will experiment with border styles and explore special features such as Serendipity, Symmetry and WreathMaker.  You will work extensively with the Graph Pad as you set blocks in Custom Set, appliqué motifs in Layer 2, and stencils or embroidery in Layer 3.  If you use appliqué with your pieced quilts or like to add digitized embroidery designs, learning to use layers is essential.  You will also discover EQ6's advanced color features and learn special printing techniques.  This is the third class in the EQ6 series.  Four LessonsSupply List.  See student projects in the Gallery.

Paper and Foundation Piecing

Paper Pieced Paradise   Paper piecing, foundation piecing, sew and flip, whatever you call this method, using it you will give you perfect blocks and no more chopped off points!  During this class, Daphne Greig will show you how to create your foundations, select and prepare your fabrics and how to sew perfect blocks every time.  Even traditional blocks can be pieced this way; it is not just for small blocks or unusual blocks with sharp points.  You can make the layout as shown in the class sample or rearrange the blocks to create a sampler or a completely different scene. Strip Mine!   Be prepared to have fun with teacher Patti Anderson while making this quick and easy foundation string pieced quilt.  Layouts will be given for both the Lap size and the Wall quilt.  You choose which size you want to make.  Random-sized strips are sewn to the background/foundation using a stitch and flip method.  When the blocks are sewn together, the diamonds stand out as the main design element and folks wonder where the blocks begin and end.  You will learn tips for working with scraps and efficient ways to cut them.  A word of warning: Stitching string pieced quilts has been known to be habit forming among fabric collectors!  Lap size quilt: 50 1/2" x 62 1/2".  Wall quilt: 32 1/2" x 32 1/2".  All levels.  Three LessonsSupply List.  See some student samples in the Gallery.

Math for Quilters   Are you afraid of numbers because you let someone convince you that some people have no head for figures?  Let Dena Crain show you that anyone can tame the numbers that you need to be a quilter.  A designer who uses math, instead of a mathematician who designs, Dena teaches this class in a way everyone can understand.  You will plan a quilt, draft a block pattern to scale, change the setting from straight to on point, develop rotary cutting plans and pattern layouts, figure yardage requirements, calculate the cost of your quilt, and learn how to set a price for it.  A bonus lesson introduces the connection between quilting and advanced mathematics.  No sewing.  Three LessonsSupply List.  All levels.

Getting Started Online   Are you ready to take your place online?  Whether you are planning to enter the marketplace, help run your guild Web site or just establish a showcase for your quilting talents, Julie Neu will guide you to the correct choice and help you establish your Web presence.  Defining your goals will determine whether you choose to enter an established community, start a blog or launch a Web site.  Julie will also show you the best ways to publicize your site.  No Web experience or design software is needed, but you should be comfortable with your computer and with navigating online.  All levels.  Three Lessons.  See Outline.
