Constructing a Flying Geese Unit

First sew one side to the main triangle. The bottom points should align. The top point will extend about 1/4"

Finger press the seam open, toward the gold side. Attach second outer triangle, again matching bottom points. The two extensions at the top should cross like bunny ears.

Press second seam to gold side and trim unit, being sure to leave a 1/4" seam allowance at top so point will not be whacked off. Measure width of geese unit from center point, so it remains symmetrical (the two gold triangles should be equal. For example, if your geese unit is 3 1/2 x 6 1/2", the top point should be at the 3 1/4" mark on your ruler.  You must use a rectangular ruler to square this unit.  Markings on the square ruler will not be facing in the right direction.

This diagram shows how the top and bottom of the FG unit would be trimmed. The top trimming line MUST leave the 1/4" seam allowance above the point.  The bottom simply trims off any extra so that the unit measures correctly.

Hint:  Try one unit this way.  If you find that it comes out too small, cut your half square triangles slightly larger.  For example, to make a FG unit  3 1/2" X 6 1/2", you would normally see directions for 3 7/8" squares cut in half on the diagonal.  I routinely raise that to 4".  It is easier to measure and it allows a couple extra threads in the diagonal seam.
